Daikin Malaysia: Developing Emotionally Intelligent Young Talent

Client

Daikin is a global leader in air conditioning solutions with a strong presence in Malaysia, relying on cross-functional collaboration among a large base of young engineers, executives, and support staff.

Business Challenge

Daikin’s HR team observed that younger employees:

  • Struggled to build trust and connection across departments
  • Found it difficult to handle misunderstandings and conflict constructively
  • Showed higher turnover risk in early years of employment

They sought a partner to strengthen emotional intelligence (EQ), improve interdepartment collaboration, and support better retention among young talent, consistent with research linking EQ development to lower turnover and higher engagement.

Our Solution

Since 2022, Daikin has partnered with Mr Yong to deliver:

  • Program: “Mastering Emotional Intelligence to Foster Positive Relationships and Resolve Conflict at Work”
  • Format: 6 sessions per year, focused on young and early-career employees
  • Objectives:
    • Build self-awareness and emotional regulation
    • Improve communication and collaboration across departments
    • Equip staff with practical tools for resolving workplace conflict

Innovation: Voice Analysis for Self-Awareness

  • Integrated voice analysis as a self-awareness assessment tool
  • Participants receive feedback on tone, pace, and vocal energy, making EQ practical and data-informed, aligned with modern approaches that blend behavioural insight with technology.

Ongoing Support: GuideX as a Digital Mentor

Following the 2-day core training, Daikin introduced GuideX, an AI-powered digital mentor to help young employees continue learning how to manage workplace relationships in real time. GuideX provides personalised prompts and situational guidance they can access anytime, supporting them in handling social dynamics, resolving misunderstandings, and strengthening day-to-day collaboration after the classroom experience.

Participant Experience

According to Daikin HR feedback:

  • Sessions are described as fun, energetic, and highly engaging
  • Young employees feel comfortable and open speaking with Mr Yong
  • The innovative voice-based assessment boosts enthusiasm for self-learning and reflection
  • With GuideX, participants also appreciate having a “coach in their pocket” to revisit key ideas and apply EQ tools during real workplace interactions, which helps them turn insights into consistent behaviour change.

Business Impact

Based on Daikin HR’s internal analysis since the program began:

Improved collaboration

  • Young employees communicate more confidently with other departments
  • Conflicts are addressed earlier and more constructively

Higher engagement with development

  • Strong participation and positive feedback across cohorts
  • Employees show sustained interest in understanding and improving their own behaviour

Reduced turnover among young employees

  • Turnover rate for young staff has decreased compared to pre-program levels, supporting broader research that EQ development can contribute to lower turnover and better engagement.
